British photographer Tim Hetherington has won this year’s prestigious World Press Photo Contest. His photograph of a US soldier in the Korengal Valley in the Eastern province of Afghanistan beat more than 80,000 other images submitted this year

First prize in the spot news singles category went to American photographer John Moore of Getty Images who captured the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, in Rawalpindi, Pakistan.

First prize in the contemporary issues singles category was won by South African photographer Brent Stirton. While working for Newsweek he pictured the evacuation of dead Mountain Gorillas at Virunga National Park, Eastern Congo.

Agence France Presse photographer Roberto Schmidt came second in the spot news stories section with this picture taken in Nairobi, Kenya.

Third prize in the sports action stories went to Chris Detrick of The Salt Lake Tribune.

First prize in the sports features singles went to Australian photographer Andrew Quilty, showing children watching horses compete at Maxwelton races in Australia.

A series of pictures of schoolgirls living in a rural region of eastern Turkey won first place in the portraits stories category for Vanessa Winship

Second prize in the nature stories section was awarded to Canadian photographer Paul Nicklen of National Geographic Magazine whose photograph shows a Narwal hunt, Nunavut, Canada.
