A young child is treated for malaria by medical staff in Jandemar, Sierra Leone, on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007. Every 30 seconds a child in Africa dies from malaria, adding up to about one million every year. However, early test results are showing that a trial for a new vaccine, which has been in development for 20 years, seems promising in a study done on African babies in Mozambique. After three months, the infants who had received the vaccine were 65 percent less likely to contract malaria than a control group. If successful, the vaccine will be licensed in 2011.
